It has extremely high chemical activity. The carbon-carbon double bonds and anhydride groups in the molecule enable it to undergo various reactions such as addition, polymerization and esterification. It reacts with alcohols to form monoesters or diesters, with amines to form amides, and with water to form maleic acid. Double bonds can participate in free radical polymerization or copolymerization reactions to generate polymaleic anhydride and its copolymers.
